Dore: Lovecraft Monsters in the 19th Century
I like to think of that as a "Wilbur Whately-esque" figure.
Gustave Dore was a French artist from the 19th century who drew some pretty wild stuff. There is a very large gallery of Gustave Dore art available for free on the wikicommons (I love living in this world).
He illustrated loads of interesting stuff, from Tennyson to Dante to Milton. Apparently Lovecraft was an admirer of his work. (Lovecraft certainly professed admiration for Tennyson, Dante, and Milton.) One could hardly fail to see the weirdness seeping into young HP, especially when one looks back and checks out "Orlando Furioso." Flammarion is publishing what looks to be an epic collection of reproductions of Dore's works - Gustav Dore 1832-1883: Master of Imagination.
But you could just as easily check out the gallery linked above at the Wikicommons or check out the Dover paperback Dore gallery.
