"The Litany of Earth" - Mythos Fiction on Tor.com

9781466868946-682x1024 "The Litany of Earth" by Ruthanna Emrys is a melancholic meditation based on Lovecraft's throwaway mention of the FBI from The Shadow Over Innsmouth, paralleling the imagined sins against the Deep Ones and the "Aeonists" with the real life sins against the Japanese. Boy, "the Aeonists" is a real cool name for Cthulhu cults. Reminds me of someone mentioning geological "deep time" in relation to Lovecraft's stories. A short lovely read, with a novel take on an old story, including some sympathy for characters that don't often receive any.
So, our family collections were still lost. I remembered the feel of the old pages, my father leaning over me, long fingers tracing a difficult passage as he explained its meaning—and my mother, breaking in with some simple suggestion that cut to the heart of it. Now, the only books I had to work with were the basic texts and single children’s spellbook in the store’s backroom collection. The texts, in fact, belonged to Charlie—my boss—and I bartered my half-remembered childhood Enochian and R’lyehn for access.
